The Snow Carol

from Christmas Hymnal by Forest Mountain Hymnal

/

about

This song is most lovingly dedicated to Miss Johanna Rose Moran and Mister Eric Michael Keen, with whom we passed one of the most glorious snow evenings known in the history of man. This evening, of course, took place in Sewanee, the world's most magical town.

Additionally, it is dedicated to Mister Joseph Mooradian, our little brother, who now attends Sewanee, to whom we have passed the baton. With this song, we encourage him to go on many midnight walks in the snowy forests of the Mountain.

Much love goes to the three of you, and all Sewanee snow walkers, past and present.

lyrics

Part I: We Are Called by the Moon and the Snow

That night the moon shown so bright!
It called to us like a siren at sea.
The snow came tumbling down - it fell to the ground.
It sheltered her like a harbor.

We walked along,
The snow silent and strong.
We felt alive!
Winter as our song,
The earth like a prayer.
We walked along.

Part II: We Get into a Snow Ball Fight with Strangers

Dark and low, are they friend or foe?
We don’t know.
Dark and low, are they friend or foe?
We don’t know.
You hide there, I’ll go here,
And we’ll get them I swear.
I’ll hide there, you go here,
And they won’t know what hit them,
What hit them,
What hit them...
What hit them?

Part III: We are Victorious and Joyful
(musical interlude)

Part IV: We are Reverent in the Garden (for trees, especially in the snow, are holier than we are)

In the woods the earth shone,
And your hands were milk,
And the leaves were stone.
In the garden the earth was new,
And the sky was glass,
And your eyes were blue...

Part V: We Sleep

Sleep with me my dearest friend!
We’ll sleep beneath down feathers tonight.
We’ll dream of a world that’s snowy and bright.

Come home with me, my own true love!
We’ll sleep and dream of the moon up above.

Part VI: We Awake

Sun comes through panes of snow,
And the covers glow,
And the world awakes,
As we do too.
